Hooch Pirates back at it again!
Jenny, Shelly, Cassi & Suzanna joined up in Chicago at the Gay Games to win gold in the Master's Women's 4+! Woohoo! See official results here. We also won gold in the Master's Women's 8+ where we are listed as the "composite" crew. We placed 2nd in the race, but Mendota was disqualified for not registering. We rowed with a fantastic rower named Renee, from Chicago, in our 4+ and with women from Boston, Alaska & Chicago in the 8+. Cassi also rowed in a mixed 8+ at the end of the day and got a bronze medal.

Thanks to Suzanna for agreeing to cox us instead of row in the 4+, Beth for watching our stuff and being a great spectator, Renee for being an awesome bow-port-rower, the San Diego boys for being so adorably awesome in their new sweep rowing abilities and to all the supporters we had on the shore during our races!!

Where will we go next? Who knows?

The next adventure for the Hooch Pirates is the Gay Games! They are being held in Chicago July 15th-22nd. We are planning on racing a four with Shelly, Jenny, Suzanna & Cassi. We're going back to our roots with the original four.

Stay tuned for practice updates and more information.

First practice (for Shelly, Jenny & Cassi) is on Saturday - June 10th, 2006 at 7am at ARC with Beth Lasher subbing for Suzanna and hopefully a coxswain will join us. We're hoping Suzanna is at least dreaming about rowing so that she's ready to kick some ass in Chicago.

Shelly will be in charge of organizing our weekly rows, so look for more news from her.

In other news... Aimee's getting ready to leave for Henley and then she got her ass in such a pucker she could hardly stand it!! (ha ha. she said it.) Anyways, the draw was posted the other night and it looks like there are 7 boats in her event. They have a bye the first round, so at most will have only two races - semi's and a final. The other boats in our event are St. Joseph's - who just won Dad Vails, and Villanova A & B, who also just took 2nd behind St. Joe's at Dad Vails (although, their JV - assuming that's their B boat - got knocked out in the heat). As well, there is a Dutch boat that is comprised of the Dutch national team. Holy shnikey's!! She thinks they are going to have some tough competition... so keep us updated Aimee. You're gonna kick some ass on the other side of the pond - we can just feel it.

Ree has taken up ultimate again for the summer but is still rowing and will be subbing in the GG4 for our practices. Beth bought a house and disappeared into it. Perhaps we will see her again one day? Then there is Schwegs... lost in Boston somewhere we assume.

I was thinking that from November until say February... or until we change our minds, we could have "casual" rowing. Three scheduled practices a week in which we can scull or sweep depending on the number of people who show up - practice is not mandatory. Personally, I'd like to get some sculling in at least once on a weekday, and I'd like us to try to get in the four on Saturdays.

I suggested Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 5:00 PM and Saturdays... sometime between 9 and 11 AM as a start time. Whenever the boat is available. We can aim for 10 AM.

Cassi, Ree, Jenny, Beth... Do these days times generally agree with you? Do you have another suggestion for days and or times?

Aimee and Sarah, do you want to row with us?

Once we nail down what days of the week we are going, I'm thinking we'll have a weekly post here on Mondays for everybody to say whether or not they will be there for each practice of the week. Again, if you have a better suggestions, please suggest it.

With all that said. I plan on rowing Tuesday, Wendesday and Saturday of this week. Do you? BTW - Saturday is the Henley-on-the-Hooch event. See the next post.

Here’s an opportunity to watch, and row a couple of fun races, and to enjoy the company of your fellow rowers from the ARC and our neighboring clubs.

ROW-OFF AND GRILL-OUT
Saturday morning, November 19th
at the park below the ARC boathouse
from 10 AM to 2 PM

THE RACES
The local high schools, plus Augusta, will race each other in fours and eights;
from 10:00 to 2:00

A few races for doubles and fours and/or eights will be open to all ARC members for sign up on site;
at 11:00 and at 1:00
Crews will be assembled on site, boats are open to all members, and the emphasis will be on fun!

Just show up at 10:00 and we’ll form some boats.

THE FOOD
The St.Andrews parents will send their grilling experts, and hungry stomachs will be fed, with total disregard to dress codes;
at noon

Captain Bravado

Long ago, there lived an officer of the Royal Navy named Captain Bravado. He was a manly man's man, who showed no fear when facing his enemies.

Wednesday mornings at Emory are almost 100% assured. I talked to Meg and she said that she would like to have her 8 row against us. They currently only practice in the afternoons, but she said that she will tell her girls to arrange for early Wednesday practices. We really must row when Meg is present so there is a launch on the water. Stone Mountain rangers are no longer allowing 4's and 8's to be on the water in the dark (especially) without a launch. Meg will let me know for sure, but I would count on Wednesday morning at Emory.

PLEASE NOTE CHANGES FOR 2005:
There is NO PRACTICE Saturday morning due to a full day of racing. Competitors are advised to practice on Friday. Practice time will be available after the last race on Saturday (approx. 4:30pm). No boats may launch after 5:30, and for safety reasons, all boats must be off the water by 6:00pm. Crews violating this rule may be penalized or disqualified.

Trailer Stuff

Regarding driving the trailer to Boston...The Emory coaches decided that they would rather take the trailer to Knoxville. After working out the cost of driving and the money that we would charge, our net gross would be $0. So, I bought my plane ticket and I am on the same flights that Ree posted. I'm still working on the boat situation for us. But don't worry, I'm sure I can find a trailer for the St. Andrew's boats, which would keep the option of us rowing their boat. I'll call Dan and Rob and between the three of us, we'll find a trailer and therefore a boat for us. Sorry about all of this. I can only do so much when it comes to Emory Crew.

Cubicle Hell

Upon arriving at my new post in the Digital Libraries division of Emory Library for my fellowship, I was confronted with seemingly good news. "Good news," my boss said, "I got you a cubicle." So, here I am in a cubicle about 4' x 3' and I already want to shoot myself after 15 minutes. I thought it was a joke and then she told me that I should feel free to decorate my cubicle as I wish. Oh great, I feel so much better now. I'm not really sure how people work under such circumstances and really, one of the reasons I'm getting a PhD is so I don't work in a cubicle. This seriously sucks. I really don't know what to do with myself. Just had to share...

Also, I have to be out of town September 18 (Sunday) but can row on September 15th (Friday) if we wanted to switch those practices. We'll have to discuss that also.

Marion, NC is really in the middle of no-where. But this hotel has a nice workout room and a nice hot-tub - things look brand new. Next trip is to Newport News, VA. Hopefully near the beach! If only...

Big Day

Today is a big day...for those of you who sat at Jake's wondering how it is that I still function with dial-up, fear not, DSL is on its way. Yes, that's right. I broke down and purchased DSL today. It may be difficult to believe, considering I've never used such items as Instant Messenger and that using these blogs were a challenge for me. As much as I love the cheap and easy route of dial-up, I realized that I needed to stand up like modern man and move forward. The only thing is that I'm getting all of this hardware and I'm hoping that it is self-explanatory. If not, can someone help me set up my DSL? Who knows, maybe wireless is next.

The schedule link to the right is updated with the changes we made last night at practice. Appropriate birthdays and parties have been added. All practices are now at 5:30 to avoid traffic. Rowing Delays

Our Tuesday stadium practice has become a 6:30pm water practice. I presume that Cassi and I will still meet at GA Tech and row up to ARC and meet Ree and Shelly. Let's try and reschedule our stadium practice for Friday since Ree will be in town.

Ok ladies - thank Christen for the AWESOME deal we got on our hotel reservation. Here is the info:

ITINERARY DETAILS:
- 2 rooms with 2 double beds each
- 3 nights (friday, saturday, sunday - mean arrive friday morning, drop off bags, go to race site , practice, leave monday morning)
- AAA membership reservations (Christen & Jenny need to bring their AAA cards)
- reservations on Cassi's credit card (can cancel up to 24 hours before day)
- total price: $1257 (divide by 7 people and it's $180 each for all 3 nights)
- (note: christen & cassi may have to leave sunday night so we will redo the costs per person if that is the case and maybe drop a room that last night)

I think it sounds pretty damn good.

Tuesday practice

I was wondering how flexible people's schedules are for this upcoming week. We tentatively have practice Tuesday evening. I know that Shelly is out of town, but for those who are in town, is it possible to make a scheduling adjustment? Perhaps we can row Monday evening, Tuesday morning, Wednesday evening? My Tuesday evening is bad for this week. I'm sorry, it's just this week that I realized I have a conflict.

Nice rate pyraminds last night guys - I thought it went well.

Next practices:
Weds 7/27 (still at 6:30 due to the heat) & Sun 7/31 at 6:30.

I know I keep saying this, but I will have a workout schedule soon. Send REE any dates you will be out of town.

The most we will be practicing is 4 times a week is looks like (Sun through Weds nights). We all need to be doing some serious steady state (half on the erg) on our own and getting in weights once a week too. I have scheduled in some land practices (one of the four practices a week) for the first month - but we should all be working out outside of these practices too.

No doubt the Hooch Pirates are a priority for everyone (if not, ye have to walk the plank), but once we get the schedule fixed and agreed upon - there shouldn't be much reason to miss practice besides what is on the schedule. Seriously, we had too many subs last year and we don't need to have that again. This is for fun, but you never know who we might have to race, and we need to be prepared;)

Keep an eye on your weights, and we'll discuss them in a few weeks. I have no doubt that we will be fine and noone will lose any more than 5 pounds (which we'll do just from working out more!). Just know where you are at so when we discuss it we can set target weights.

Other Fall Races

On the left you will see dates/links for other fall races.
Two of the Five of us are interested in doing the Head of the Potomac. Any input?
The Head of the Lanier is so close - we might as well row there too.
Then there is THE CHARLES.
I don't know if we want to do the Hooch-a-Nooga...I guess it depends on who enters that one.
I guess just start thinking about these dates and if you would like to row in those regattas. We'll iron out the details later.
